Here are
five considerations to keep in mind BEFORE you buy replacement windows:
Most
products that sell for $100 to $200 will usually wind up costing you much more
money in the long run. Nobody can afford to sell you a top-quality window for
under $200. Cheap products like that will usually need to be replaced within a
few short years, plus they will probably cause you to waste your hard-earned
money by paying too much on your heating and cooling costs.
Check the
fine print on the warranty. Most of these products are only made to last
between 10 to 20 years. And most so-called "lifetime warranties" are
only warranted for the life of the product, NOT the life of the homeowner.
Everything
else being equal, three panes of glass is usually much more energy-efficient
than two panes of glass. However, not even all triple pane products are equally
energy-efficient. The best-quality triple pane products have multiple layers of
reflective soft coating to keep out the cold in the winter and keep the heat
out in the summer.
Just look up
the product and check the U-Factor. The lower the U-Factor, the more
energy-efficient the product is.
Check the
Security Locking System. Most companies do not advertise their locking system.
That's because most of them have flimsy locks that make it easy for thieves to
vandalize your home. Protect your valuables and loved ones with steel
dead-bolts, preferably ones with 4-point locking.
If you're
looking for the best product at the best price, that may or may not be the
product that is the best known. If that product is the best known, it may be
because that company spends a lot of money on advertising and expensive
showrooms. Guess who pays for that? Sometimes an independent distributor will
keep his overhead low so that he can provide a better product at a better price
to the consumer. It's best to do a little comparison shopping before making a
purchasing decision. The last thing you want is an unscrupulous high-pressure
salesperson camping out in your living room, trying to bully you to purchase
"the best replacement window!"
